Connecting to SQL Server from Java over TCP/IP « Dan Haywood

Been a while since I did this; turns out it’s easy enough. First, you’ll need the current JDBC driver from Microsoft, which can be found here.  Add to classpath as usual. Set up your Java application to use the following JDBC connection settings:ConnectionDriverName=com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriverConnectionURL=jdbc:sqlserver://127.0.0.1:1433;instance=SQLEXPRESS;da... Welcome to the second part of this tutorial. Don’t freak out when you see how long this article is – I promise you it’s mostly easy POJOs and some generated code Before we start, we need to update our Maven dependencies, because we will be using Hibernate and Spring now. (more)

A better java shell script wrapper

Monday, August 13, 2012 11:04:13 AM GMT Saturday, August 11, 2012 2:25:24 PM GMT
In many Java projects, you often see wrapper shell script to invoke the java command with its custom application parameters. For example, $ANTHOME/bin/ant, $GROOVYHOME/bin/groovy, or even in our TimeMachine Scheduler you will see $TIMEMACHINE_HOME/bin/scheduler.sh. Writing these wrapper script is boring and error prone. Most of the problems come from setting the correct classpath for the application. If you're working on an in-house project for a company, then you can get away with hardcoding paths an... (more)

You think that your shiny Java app has some memory issues but how do you find out if that is true and what is taking up all that memory? Knowing the potential problems is fine. Nevertheless you still have to find out your actual problems. There are several instruments available to help you analyse your Java application regarding its memory usage. I will tell you about increasing your maximum heap (most of you surely know  about that), looking at the memory of a running app, making heap dumps (on demand o... (more)

When you look at the test code you cannot see which type of exception is thrown. First it is better for clarity to document which type is thrown and second any bugs in the called code who throw unintended exceptions are swallowed here. Better: try { callFailingMethod() fail() } catch (ParseException e) { } Problems: If it fails you don’t see why: so always use a message for fail. Better: ... (more)

Hibernate 3.0, the latest Open Source persistence technology at the heart of J2EE EJB 3.0 is available for download from Hibernet.org. The Hibernate 3.0 core is freely available under the LGPL Hibernate maps the Java classes to the database tables. It also provides the data query and retrieval facilities that significantly reduces the development time. Objects are a powerful software engineering construct, and Java uses them extensively. In fact, it encourages the use of objects so much that developers sometimes forget the costs behind the construct. The result can be object churn, a program state in which most of your processor time is soaked up by repeatedly creating and then garbage collecting objects. (more)

get vs load in HibernateDifference between get and load method in Hibernate is a one of the most popular question asked in Hibernate and spring interviews. Hibernate Session  class provides two method to access object e.g. session.get() and session.load() both looked quite similar to each other but there are subtle difference between load and get method which can affect performance of application. Main difference between get() vs load method is that get() involves database hit if object doesn't exists in... (more)

Groupusers on JBoss Application Server v7.0 When you first download JBoss, it comes as an easy-to-install zip file. Upon installation, you can easily deploy EJBs, web applications and a whole array of services. However, you may be suprised how easy it is to compromise the services. JBossSX can fix that by securing those functions. Secure the Jmx Console Both the jmx-console and web-console are standard servlet 2.3 deployments that can be secured using J2EE role-based security.
