Roger Kitain This Tech Tip covers the intersection of three powerful technologies that are part of the Java EE 6 platform: JSR 299: Contexts and Dependency Injection, JSR 330: Dependency Injection For Java, and JSR 314: JavaServer Faces 2.0. JSR 299: Contexts and Dependency Injection (CDI) defines a set of services for the Java EE environment that makes applications much easier to develop. It provides an architecture that allows Java EE components such as servlets, enterprise beans, and JavaBea... (more)

Luc Bors Weblog: ADF 11g popup and panelwindow: Open wikipedia in a modal popup.

This post was more or less inspired by the noteWindow example on Oracles tag demo site. When hovering the highlighted text in this example the user gets extra information about the subject. I wanted to give the end user the opportunity to get even more information, for instance by invoking a wikipedia page about the subject. The catch here is that I wanted this information to be shown in a modal popup, and one that is not prohibited by popup blockers. Luckily ADF 11g provides javascript popups that c... (more)

Difference between HashSet and TreeSet in Java |JavaTechInfo.Com

Difference between HashSet and TreeSet in Java ReplyList, Map, Set HashSet: HashSet is much faster than TreeSet but offers no ordering guarantees like TreeSet.Class offers constant time performance for the basic operations (add, remove, contains and size). It does not guarantee that the order of elements will remain constant over timeIteration performance depends on the initial capacity and the load factor of the HashSet.It's quite safe to accept default load factor but you may want to specify an init... Tricky Core Java Interview Question and Answers Describe the three OOO principles ? Encapsulation - It is the way the code and data are confined and are in isolation from the outside environment of the system. EXAMPLE: In a car the engine can be thought about as an encapsulated which is controlled by the starter key and the gear. The operation of the engine does not affect the functioning of other parts of car like the headlight and wiper. In JAVA basis of encapsulation i... (more)

It’s a common topic In  java interviews. And these two methods are always common to any class you write in Java. So let’s know them in and out. boolean equals(Object  obj) and int hashCode() are two methods implemented in Object class with several other methods.  In Java every class implicitly inherit Object class so every class has these methods.  Equals method check the reference is holding same object or not.MyClass obj1 = new MyClass();MyClass obj2 = 0bj1;Then obj1.equals(obj2) returns true.MyClass o... Struts is a set of Java classes and JSP tag libraries that uses a model-view-controller (MVC) design pattern to provide a framework for developing Web applications. It is an open source subproject of the Apache Software Foundation’s Jakarta project. Hibernate is an open source Object/ Relational Mapping solution for Java environments. It reduces the development cost by reducing paradigm mismatch between how data is represented in objects versus relational databases. Hibernate takes care of the mappin... (more)

In many Java projects, you often see wrapper shell script to invoke the java command with its custom application parameters. For example, $ANTHOME/bin/ant, $GROOVYHOME/bin/groovy, or even in our TimeMachine Scheduler you will see $TIMEMACHINE_HOME/bin/scheduler.sh. Writing these wrapper script is boring and error prone. Most of the problems come from setting the correct classpath for the application. If you're working on an in-house project for a company, then you can get away with hardcoding paths an... (more)

I’ve seen a lot of MemoryLeaks caused by wrong usage patterns of ThreadLocal variables. As I had this problem in one of our own applications yesterday, I want to blog about this case. ThreadLocal variables are used in Java to bind a variable to the current Thread - each thread will have its own, independend instance of that variable. These kind of variables are normally used to hold status informa... (more)

JSF and the "immediate" Attribute - Command Components - Java Code Geeks

The immediate attribute in JSF is commonly misunderstood. If you don't believe me, check out Stack Overflow. Part of the confusion is likely due to immediate being available on both input (i.e.. ) and command (i.e. ) components, each of which affects the JSF lifecycle differently. (more)

JVMinside: Experimenting with Datanucleus JPA

I have been using Hibernate for a very long time, and I'm more or less satisfied with it. When I saw that Google App Engine uses the JPA/JDO implementation of Datanucleus for high level persistence, I decided to create a sample JPA project with it. My goal was to implement one single project, where the Hibernate and the Datanucleus JPA providers live between each other peacefully, so they can be easily compared using the same set of unit tests. Because Datanucleus uses bytecode enhancement I dec... (more)

DataNucleus: JDO Typesafe .vs. JPA Criteria

JPA2 introduced its "Criteria" queries, providing an API for typesafe query generation without the need to hardcode field names etc in queries; it built on the approach of Hibernate Criteria. DataNucleus includes a proposal for JDO "Typesafe" queries. It takes a slightly different approach aiming at usability and elegance. In this blog post we compare some queries using the two APIs. In these examples we have two classes, Inventory and Product, where Inventory has a set of products. Select of pe... (more)

In April 2009 Google announced AppEngine for Java, providing support for JDO and JPA. Since that time people have had the chance to see what they think of it and identify shortcomings. This has lead to many misconceptions of JDO and JPA (though mainly JDO) due to thinking that what Google provide is a full and true representation of these standards; it isn't. This blog entry attempts to correct some of these misconceptions, and to suggest some areas where Google could remedy the situation. All of the fol... (more)
