Apr132012 What do developers like most? Build new software! What do developers hate most? Testing and writing documentation! Why would you write tests? It slows down your process of making new software. If you can write that new feature in an hour, why spend another hour on writing unit tests and integration tests for them. You don't make mistakes and if some user does something you didn't expect he would, blame him first, then think of fixing it. If you had written tests before then they suddenly break... (more)

The original post can be found on the ekito website. For one of our client, we need to show a map with vehicles position updated in real-time. So I began to make a prototype using Play! framework, with its latest released version 2.0, using the Java API. I started from the websocket-chat of the Play! 2.0 samples. The purpose of the prototype is to show a moving vehicle on a map. The location of the vehicle is sent to the server through a REST call (at the end, it will be sent by an Android app), and ... Play framework 2 quicktip: interactively play with your application from the scala consoleWhen I first started to play with Scala, I was amazed by the Scala interactive interpreter (also known as REPL, read-evaluate-print-loop). It was one of those things that you never expected to find in a statically typed, compiled language like java or scala. What would you say if we could have it for our play applications?… In scala OR JAVA! And yes, with tab completion and all the bells-and-whistles… In this articl... (more)

Just a couple of years ago finding an afordable hosting solution for a java web application was a hard task, and looking for a free one was an impossible mission. Not to mention that even thinking about things like auto-scaling, one-command deploy, continuos integration, and that sort of stuff was plain science fiction. This last year has witnessed a cloud revolution, and nowdays there’s a really appalling amount of alternatives to choose from. It seemed like every medium-to-large size IT player had to... (more)

Convert Jar to EXE, jar file to executable, java JAR to EXE. Converting Jar to exe.

It is sometime desirable to convert the JAR file in to EXE (executable) and distribute the EXE. Although the exe can be executed only in Windows environment, this will definitely affects the “platform independency” of a Java program. Still if you want to convert a JAR file in EXE then following tools are for you. (more)

Last post might have left a bitter taste in Scala’s fans mouth. In there, after developing a very simple script with scala, bash and python, I found the latter one better suited for the task. This time I’ll take a more pragmatic -and less pedagogic- approach, and will just try to mimic the Python script in Scala, and, at the same time, I will have a look at implicit conversions, Scala's answer to open classes. A couple of readers of my previous article on scala argued that for such a simple task it was preferable a bash or python script. Luckily all of them understood that this was just an excuse to give scala a try. Nevertheless, to make justice to bash and python, with some googling around I managed to reproduce the funcionality of the scala script. Which one do you like best? (more)
