Modern IDEs like Eclipse provide various Plugins to ease web developement. However, I believe that starting Tomcat as "normal" Java application still provides the best debugging experience. Most of the time, this is because these tools launch Tomcat or any other servlet container as external process and then attach a remote debugger on it. (more)

There seems to be some confusion regarding Play 2 modules and plugins. I imagine this is because the two are often synonymous. In Play (both versions – 1 and 2) there are distinct differences. In this post, I’m going to look at what a plugin is, how to implement one in Java and Scala, and how to import plugins from modules.Plugins (more)

A very common need in the lifecycle of a project is setting up integration testing. When using jQuery with struts 2, the developers are persuaded to use struts2-jQuery plug-in. Because most of the forums and other Internet resources support struts2 jQuery plug in. I have this experience. I wanted to use jQuery grid plug-in with struts 2,but without using struts2 jQuery plug-in. It was very hard for me to find a tutorial or any good resource.... (more)

It’s another day, which means another gradle tip. I have been experimenting with JMX lately and using MBeanExporter to export spring beans so that I can interact with them over JMX (specifically, stopping and starting rabbitMQ consumers). I can get this working on any container easily enough but I really wanted to get it working with my locally running jetty instance launched by gradle. (more)

Lately at work we’ve been using the tomcat plugin for our gradle projects instead of the bundled jetty plugin. There were a lot of reasons for doing this with the main reason being our production environment for our current project is tomcat so it makes sense to have an embedded server that mirrors that environment. My last blog explained the relationships between Mavan life-cycles, build phases and goals from a height of about 3 miles. In explaining Maven’s goals I mentioned the tomcat:redeploy goal without really defining where it came from. Well, the answer is that the tomcat:redeploy goal isn’t a default goal or part of the default Maven installation, it’s part of the tomcat-maven-plugin. This plugin comes with several useful goals that allow you to manipulate Tomcat as part of your build process - the big idea... (more)
