The Cucumber open source software testing tool lets software development teams describe how software should behave in plain text. The text is written in a business-readable domain-specific language and serves as documentation, automated tests and development-aid – all rolled into one format. This video explains how you should be able to test your Java code with cucumber. (more)

It is interesting to read the perspectives of those associated with PrimeFaces, the perspectives of those associated with ICEfaces, and the community reaction (and here). (more)

As recently announced, HP has began the process that will release webOS to the open-source community. This is great news for developers that have been wanting to create software for these devices and probably the best outcome that HP could have made since they were no longer going to develop the platform. This is also an opportunity to bring together Linux and other open-source mobile platforms together to join forces in a meaningful way. webOS’s open-source license is tho... (more)

As we mentioned in out last post we have been working on a site to help Java Developers use Open Source Projects. The site is in an early stage but we want to work on the site openly and improve it with your feedback. Out goal is to help you use an Open Source Project. We want to help you easily look at the API’s/Javadoc; Make it easy to get a code snippet for using a feature in a library; Simplify finding the right blog post; And even get you a high-level view of the project. Yes, it’s a big goal, but... (more)

This post will show a simple example using Drools 5. Any Drools initialization process involves Creation of KnowledgeBuilder, KnowledgePackage(s), KnowledgeBase and a session (statefull or stateless) created by KnowledgeBase. In this example the rules are defined in basicRules.drl file(a simple text file). At this example Account instances are validated against the rules during a statefull session while few facts are inserted in some points of the example. Firing rules also invoked few times. (more)

In this post I will describe Drools fundamental. A more advanced example can be found here. Drools has lots to offer. Fortunately, it’s app building blocks are numbered. This is a good thing as the entry point into the Rules world made easy. I will start by describing Drools main parts (Drools key terms will be decorated in bold): Rules – Where you specify conditions (If a then b) (more)

31Drools: Good practices writing rules Writing rules that do their job, are easy to read and are efficient is everyone's goal, but how can we achieve that? The idea of this post is to share some tips that will help you improve your rule writing skills. No matter what programming language you are using, premature optimization always leads to complex code with almost no profit at all. Drools is the exception to this rule, often improving its performance leads to cleaner and simpler code.Avoid unnec... (more)

The first time I had to deal with Drools it took me a time to understand it's purpose and potencial. The reason of this post is to explain in a simple way what drool is and when it should be used. Lets start with some basic definitions: A business rule is a statement that defines a constrain of the business. For example a business rule might be that all the cars whose model is "Fiat" must be painted black. A knowledge base is a special kind of database for knowledge management. In the... (more)

Part one of this article revisits an old concept and introduces a new technology for the Java Enterprise developer's utility belt. I'll discuss how Rules Engines can improve the agility of your business by helping you isolate the "logic of the bottom line" from the technical logic of your software applications. I'll also introduce the JSR-94 Rules Engine API and an Open Source product called Drools, the forerunner implementation of this up-and-coming technology. In part two, we'll revisit our examples in... Android Game Development – OpenGL Texture Mapping - Java Code Geeks

In the previous two articles (article 1 and article 2) I have tried to introduce OpenGL ES on android. Now let’s take it further and build on them. In this article we will create a billboard (which is a square) and we will apply a texture onto it. A texture is nothing more than a bitmap image. When we work in 2D we set the Z coordinate to 0. We’ll cover 3D later. This is very useful to use in 2D games and is the preferred way to display images using OpenGL. It is very fast indeed. (more)
