In many Java projects, you often see wrapper shell script to invoke the java command with its custom application parameters. For example, $ANTHOME/bin/ant, $GROOVYHOME/bin/groovy, or even in our TimeMachine Scheduler you will see $TIMEMACHINE_HOME/bin/scheduler.sh. (more)

If you survey around Java open source land, it's really disappointing in not able to find a decent project management web app that we can use. The Java war file deployment in an app server is easy to use, and it would give us good performance. Especially if we already in a Java shop, having a project management tool that deploys in an existing app server would be easier to maintain. (more)

One of the many wonderful features of Java 5 SE is the introduction of the Annotations construct. Annotations are tags that we can insert into our program source code for some tool to process it and make sense out of it. Annotations processing tools generally use Reflection API (of Java 5 SE) to process the code at source level on Java code or bytecode level to process the class files into which the compiler has placed the annotations. Schauderhaft » Named Parameters in Java – an Alternative

Last time I wrote about cryptography, I outlined Apache Shiro crypto API and shown how to use its two symmetric ciphers. I also wrote that "You do not need more to encrypt and decrypt sensitive data in your applications." I learned more about cryptography and found out that you need to know more. What I wrote is true to some extend, but unless you are careful your sensitive data may not be secure against all attackers. (more)

NoBlogDefFound: What features of Java have been dropped in Scala?

posted by anishaanisha 618 days, 2 hours, 57 minutes ago

Despite more complex and less intuitive syntax compared to Java, Scala actually drops several features of Java, sometimes for good, other times providing replacements on the standard library level. As you will see soon, Scala isn't a superset of Java (like Groovy) and actually removes a lot of noise. Below is a catalogue of the missing features. (more)
