CSS AJAX Navigation

posted by tracytracy 685 days, 17 hours, 38 minutes ago

This article is a followup to my CSS Navigation article. In that article I have provided a client-side JavaScript that traverses a static HTML navigation tree and enhances it with the right style classes depending on the current URL location. This however still leaves the developer with a server-side problem: the inclusion of the navigation tree into the page. For very simple static HTML sites this is already a problem. Of course a template mechanism can be used at development time, such as Dreamweaver t... (more)

The encoding was easily detectable on the Javascript side simply by checking the xhtmls encoding (the meta tag head encoding itself would have been another option, but since we are nailed down to xhtml anyway due to facelets we have an easier way) (more)

To start, Ajax is just a buzzword that covers a set of technologies, including Dynamic HTML (DHTML) and the XMLHTTPRequest object. DHTML is a combination of three elements: Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), JavaScript code, and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Using JavaScript code on a Web page, you can change the page dynamically to add, remove, or change the content. That's the dynamic portion of DHTML. JavaScript code uses the XMLHTTPRequest object to request data from the server after the page has been... (more)

There are so many different javascript frameworks out there, but I have recently started to use jQuery, and I love it. Not only is the library much smaller than others, but it is so simple to use. I wanted to show how easy it is to turn a regular form into a AJAX form. Start with a Regular Form First, I am going to build a regular form. The form is just going to be a basic email form. You enter an email address to send to, an email address to send from, a subject, and a message. All fields are required.... (more)

Multiple file upload forms are sometimes essential for your web application but managing upload from multiple file input boxes becomes a bit tedious and lengthy. But thanks to jQuery using which we can make this task easier too. Today I’m going to create an AJAXified multiple file upload form that uses a lot lesser server side code and also provides a very nice user interface. For this tutorial, i’ll be using latest version of jQuery and Ajax upload library by Andrew Valums. Grab both libraries and add ... (more)

Create an In-Place Editing System

Design Goals Before we start looking at how to implement the functionality, here are a few thoughts about the goals and the resulting decisions. * We need to let the user edit the content without leaving the page. This is a given. * This should either function as a whole or fail as a whole. When JS is disabled, we don’t want to run into weird quirks. * The user should know the content is editable. A subtle blue background change should draw the user’s attention to this. (more)

Ajax - isn't that some kind of cleaner? No, not that Ajax. Ajax, or Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, is a new web technology that allows you, basically, to utilise JavaScript to get data from a server without reloading the whole webpage. This comes in handy for many things and is powering all of the new 'rich web applications' that are popping up now (Google Maps, Y!Mail Beta, Writely/Zoho Writer). (more)

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to combine RSS, Ajax, and JavaScript to create a live RSS ticker. Thanks to Ajax, the conventional roles of server side and client side programming are reversed in an application like this as JavaScript- not PHP- is used to handle much of the work, including parsing the RSS file. I've learned it's good form to always show your viewers exactly where you're leading them to begin with, so here are a couple of examples of the Ajax style RSS ticker I'll be discussing how t...
