Hotspot is a JVM which is shipped with Java by default. It continuously looks for code pieces which are repeatedly run and tries to optimize these identified code areas. These code pieces are known as Hot Spots and hence the name Hotspot JVM. The code blocks which are not frequently run are not considered for optimization by Hotspot as there is an overhead involved in optimizing the code. Hotspot became a part of Java in Java1.2 version. This JVM has been written in C++. (more)

Frameworks vs Libraries as Inheritance vs Composition? | Javalobby

For quite some time inheritance was the dominant model of structuring programs in OO languages like Java. Very often it was used as a mechanism for reusing code – “common” functions where placed in an abstract class, so that subclasses can use them. However, this often proves to be very limiting, as you can only inherit from a single class. The code becomes constrained and tied to one particular framework-specific class. Not to mention testing – such base classes often depend on outside state, making te... (more)

Real world feedback from a Java dev using Scala | Cape Coder

It’s no secret that a large proportion of Scala programmers originate from the Java developer community. I’ve been writing Java code since the late 90′s and have recently starting doing some dev work in Scala. Since I fall squarely within the target audience for Scala I’ve decided to share my experiences and impressions using Scala from a Java programmer’s perspective. Overall I’m very impressed by Scala and plan to use it more, but do have plenty of constructive criticism which I provide at the end of t... (more)

ActionErrors and ActionError in Struts

Struts request handling lifecycle as a happy day scenario is – from the point the user submits an html form till the user sees the next page. In reality, users of your web application may submit incorrect data or sometimes no data at all. You have to catch these as close to the user interface as possible, rather than waiting for the middle tier or the database to tell you that a column cannot be inserted in the database because it was expecting a non-null value. There are two consequences of such program... (more)

How to prepopulate a form in Struts

published 707 days, 18 hours, 19 minutes ago posted by pankajsharmapankajsharma 713 days, 9 hours, 50 minutes ago

The simplest way to pre-populate a form is to have an Action whose sole purpose is to populate an Action Form and forward to the servlet or JSP to render that form back to the client. A separate Action would then be use to process the submitted form fields, by declaring an instance of the same form bean name. (more)

What's the difference between an interface and an abstract class? An abstract class is a class that is only partially implemented by the programmer. It may contain one or more abstract methods. An abstract method is simply a function definition that serves to tell the programmer that the method must be implemented in a child class. An interface is similar to an abstract class; indeed interfaces occupy the same namespace as classes and abstract classes. For that reason, you cannot define an interface w... (more)

Java Best Practices – DateFormat in a Multithreading Environment

published 708 days, 18 hours, 37 minutes ago posted by pankajsharmapankajsharma 715 days, 10 hours, 51 minutes ago
Monday, May 07, 2012 4:05:09 PM GMT Monday, April 30, 2012 11:50:29 PM GMT
A typical case scenario is to convert a Date to its String representation or vice versa, using a predefined format. Creating new DateFormat instances for every conversion is very inefficient. You should keep in mind that the static factory methods “getDateInstance(..)” also create new DateFormat instances when used. What most developers do is that they construct a DateFormat instance, using a DateFormat implementation class (e.g. SimpleDateFormat), and assign its value to a class variable. The class scop... The RESTful approach of developing web services is constantly gaining more and more attention and seems to be pushing SOAP into deprecation. I am not going to discuss which approach is better, but I believe that we all agree that REST is much more lightweight. In this tutorial, I am going to show you how to develop RESTful services with RESTeasy and how to deploy them on a Tomcat server. An Eclipse based Maven project is also created along the way. In Scala: Sink or Swim Part 1 and Part 2, we looked at the challenges of Scala complexity from the perspective of a newcomer (especially coming from the Java world). In this post, I’ll give my thoughts on what is so great about Scala in the first place that Java developers should consider using it. A detailed account would take more than one blog post, but I’ll try to give a brief overview with links to relevant reading. Again, this post is mostly meant for Java developers that potentially want to try Sc... (more)
